Back to the Future | Sir Basil Spence 1907-1976

19th October 2007 to 10th February 2008 | Free

Spence had said it was ‘his life’s wish’ to design a cathedral and he did so with Coventry Cathedral.  Not only did this work establish his international reputation, it also earned him a knighthood, which he was awarded in 1960.

Following the success of Coventry Cathedral, Spence also received other commissions for places of worship, including three churches in the Coventry area in the late 1950s as well as Mortonhall Crematorium in Edinburgh.
