Spence was involved in the design of houses throughout his career. During the 1930s he built a trio of country houses in Scotland, and after the war produced designs for new housing schemes across Scotland and England. The best known was the high-rise Hutchesontown ‘C’ development in Glasgow’s Gorbals district, which was demolished in 1993.
