Being There | Harry Benson's Fifty Years of Photojournalism

4th August 2006 to 7th January 2007 | Tickets £6 (£4)

The show will also feature award-winning portraits from the worlds of politics, fashion, art, and Hollywood, taken by Benson for magazines such as Life and Vanity Fair.

During the 1980s, demand for colour saturated images of celebrities began to dominate magazine culture, an approach developed by everyone from Annie Leibovitz to David Lachapelle. Again, Benson was at the forefront of this trend: his cover of Ronald and Nancy Reagan dancing - on show in the exhibition - being widely regarded as the tipping point for Vanity Fair, which, newly-launched, was struggling to find an audience.

Harry Benson continues to work today (still for Vanity Fair, among others). He has twice won the prestigious National Press Photographer Association’s Magazine Photographer of the Year award, and has been awarded the 2005 LUCIE Award for Lifetime Achievement in Portrait Photography and the 2005 American Photo Award for Photography.
