Throughout the 1950s, Warhol enjoyed a successful career as a commercial artist working as an illustrator in magazines such as Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar. He was known for his whimsical ink drawings which were used both in the magazines and for advertisers and some of his work earned commendations from the Art Directors Club and the American Institute of Graphic Design. During this time as an illustrator he employed several assistants to increase the productivity of his work – something that would remain common throughout his career.
