Warhol grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where he studied art at the then-called Carnegie Institute of Technology (now called Carnegie Mellon University) before moving to New York City. After just three years in New York he staged his first individual show at the Hugo Gallery followed by a string of exhibitions which took place throughout the city. These early shows were very minor, but showed his ambition to become a ‘fine’ artist. From these beginnings Warhol went on to become one of the most notorious artists of the time.
