Spiralling Anxiety: Hysteria Transformed in the Work of Louise Bourgeois

Focusing on particular works and narratives presented in A Woman without Secrets, artist and writer Elizabeth Manchester examines the ways in which Louise Bourgeois appropriates, enacts and transforms Surrealist and psychoanalytic notions of woman as a hysteric in her art. In this talk, she proposes the ambiguous form of the spiral as Bourgeois’ most successful formal means to resolve the difficult and contradictory impulses of anxiety and aggression, with the manifestation of figures and part objects in a state of ambivalent suspension.
