Shades of Black, White and Grey: Chez Nous by Stanley Cursiter
- Tuesday, 15th April 2014, 12.45-1.15pm
Portrait Gallery (Scottish National Portrait Gallery)
This lucid composition contains a rare self-portrait of the artist and reflects his fascination with the art of the past and present. It was painted in 1925, the year Cursiter was appointed to the post of Keeper of the Scottish National Galleries. Art historian Ailsa Turner discusses the painting and the painter who went on to become both an enlightened Director of the Galleries and advocate for a Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art.
