Snapshot of the Mind: A Journey - Artist's Talk by Jennifer McRae

'The delicate thread of continuity is guided through a process of human interaction and practical endeavour to return to first base; the “snapshot” in the mind’s eye, the first impression, the very seed of inspiration.' Artist Jennifer McRae, who features in this year's BP Portrait Award and the Scottish National Portrait Gallery's collection, gives an insight into her work.

The Russian Avant-Garde: From the Icon to the Black Square and Beyond (Session 5)

In the first three decades of the twentieth century, the Russian Avant-Garde made an outstanding contribution to Western painting. In particular, Russian artists like Kazimir Malevich and Wassily Kandinsky pioneered abstraction. This seven-week course led by Professor Christina Lodder, Honorary Fellow, University of Edinburgh, will focus on movements like Neo-primitivism, Cubo-Futurism, Suprematism and Constructivism, but it will also place these within the context of the country’s distinctive artistic culture - namely the tradition of icon painting, popular prints (lubki), and the way Western trends were assimilated from the eighteenth century onwards. Session 5 - Destroying the Mimetic Tradition: Kandinsky, Cubo-Futurism and Rayism.

Léger and Beckmann: Aestheticising the Trauma of War

In response to Gallery of Modern Art's re-hang, featuring the painting of Fernand Léger and Max Beckmann, Dr Jonathan Blackwood, Duncan of Jordanstone College of Fine Art, compares and contrasts their work as differing visual responses to the trauma of the Great War. Léger, closely associated with the French Purist movement, sought in his work an idealised, classicised vision of a society trying to reconstruct itself after the horrors of the 1914-18 conflict. Beckmann, by contrast, used expressionist techniques to focus with painful intensity on the shattered ruins of Wilhelmine Germany and its uncertain future in the new Weimar republic.
