Back to the Future | Sir Basil Spence 1907-1976

19th October 2007 to 10th February 2008 | Free

Everyone will be familiar with Spence’s buildings, even if we do not know his name: Coventry Cathedral, Glasgow Airport, the Household Cavalry Barracks in London, the University of Sussex complex, high-rise housing in Glasgow’s Gorbals, all were designed by Spence.

Born in India, Spence came to Edinburgh in his youth and studied at Edinburgh College of Art.  He became a household name upon winning the design competition for the new Coventry Cathedral and from then on his career was assured.
