The Modern Scottish Still Life

  • Free

SJ Peploe is celebrated for the still lifes which he painted throughout his career. This room contains work by Peploe and his fellow Colourists, FCB Cadell and GL Hunter. It is shown alongside paintings by a younger generation of Scottish artists, including William Gillies and John Maxwell, who studied and taught at Edinburgh College of Art, as well as the work of Edward Baird and James Cowie, who studied at Glasgow School of Art.

Together the works reveal the influence of the Colourists on modern Scottish painting as well as a wide range of approaches to the still life genre, from the realism of Baird, to the Surrealism of Maxwell and Morrocco, and the painterly joy and vivid colour of Redpath and MacTaggart. The display consists of works from the Gallery’s permanent collection and others which are on loan to us.

This display accompanies The Scottish Colourist Series: SJ Peploe (3 Nov 2012 – 23 Jun 2013), a major exhibition which can also be seen at Modern Two.
