Some of the most important and beautiful paintings in the National Gallery of Scotland are on loan as part of the Bridgewater Collection.   The loan consists of 27 works including paintings by Titian, Rembrandt, Poussin and Raphael.  They have been on view to the public since the early 19th Century and on loan to the National Galleries of Scotland since 1945.

The future of the collection is now uncertain.  The owner has decided to sell a significant part of the collection, if necessary on the open market.  However, his strong preference is for the collection to remain on public view.  He has offered us the chance to acquire two key works Titian’s Diana and Actaeon and Diana and Callisto on extremely favourable terms.

The National Galleries of Scotland and the National Gallery of London have formed a partnership in an effort to acquire the two pictures for the nation and to ensure that the rest of the Bridgewater Collection remains in Scotland on loan for the next 21 years.

We have launched a major public campaign to raise the funds. We hope that a significant part of the funding will come from the Government and heritage funding bodies, but support from the public will be crucial to our efforts to save the paintings for the nation.

We need to secure £50 million by 31 December 2008 to purchase the first painting, Diana and Actaeon.

You are invited to help us with our campaign by making a gift to the Titian Fund.
