Paolozzi Junior Curatorial Fellowship
The Leverhulme Trust funded the Paolozzi Junior Curatorial Fellowship for three years to enable ground-breaking research on the Paolozzi Collection, the most important collection of works by a single artist in Scotland.
In 1995 Sir Eduardo Paolozzi gifted a large body of material from his studios in London and Munich to the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. The collection comprises 3000 sculptures, 3000 books, maquettes, prints, drawings and a huge amount of archival material. Paolozzi was keen that his work should be seen in an international context alongside the Gallery of Modern Art’s surrealist collections of his patrons Gabrielle Keiller and Sir Roland Penrose.
Paolozzi's death in 2005 generated a renewed interest in his work, and the Leverhulme grant increased the opportunity for research and re-evaluation of Paolozzi’s entire career, particularly his late output, through the assessment of the collection.
Central to the project is the provision of funding for curatorial research, which has allowed a junior scholar to gain hands-on skills and experience. Work on the project has led to a series of exhibitions, lectures, guided tours, research articles and an online catalogue, turning Paolozzi’s large and complex collection into an accessible resource and helping to advance a new generation of scholarship on British post-war art.
