The Earl of Elgin & Kincardine KT has kindly agreed to allow Friends a rare private visit to his home Broomhall. Built for the 7th Earl of Elgin, Thomas Bruce, in classical Greek style by the architect Thomas Harrison (1740-1829) it hoses a wealth of paintings, silverware, porcelain, books and Greek and Roman antiquities.

Lord Elign, a highly informative and entertaining speaker, will give us a guided tour of the main reception rooms and talk about the history behind the collection in particular that of the 7th Earl, most notably the Elgin Marbles. There will also be a display of memorabilia from James Brice of Kinnaird’s explorations in Abyssinia (1730-94).

Lucy Skaer is one of Scotland’s most exciting young artists. She was short listed for the Beck’s Future prize in 2003, and has participated in the Venice Biennale. She is a founder member of Henry VIII’s Wives, a group of artists based in Scotland and Scandinavia who collaborate on major installations and performances.

She is best known for large works on paper that combine imagery drawn from different sources in intricate, highly-wrought and often disturbingly beautiful drawings. More recently she has begun to make films and sculptures which share her drawings’ sense of coding, decoding and recoding the visual world.

We shall have a guided tour of the exhibition at the Fruitmarket, followed by a glass of wine in the gallery café.
