This book accompanies our exhibition at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery which is the first major retrospective of Hanzlová’s photography over the last two decades. Emerging from her experience of two different cultures and political systems, her work is a profound meditation on European identity in a post-Cold War world.
Born 1958 in the Czech Republic, Jitka Hanzlová moved to Germany in 1982. Between 1987 and 1994 she studied visual communication at University Essen, specialising in photography. She is perhaps best known for her work 'Femme' (1997-2000), a series of portraits of women of varying ages, whom she met on the streets of America and Europe.
Hanzlová has been awarded several photography awards, including the BMW-Paris Photo Prize 2007, the Otto Steinert Prize in 1993, and has been nominated for prestigious awards such as the London Citibank Prize for Photography. She has participated in many group exhibitions, and solo exhibitions of her work have appeared in the Museum Folkwang, Essen, Kicken Gallery, Berlin and Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.
