The Face of Scotland

James Holloway

The Scottish National Portrait Gallery was founded in 1882 after the success of a national campaign to create a specifically Scottish 'temple of fame'. It is the first purpose-built national portrait gallery in the world. This book features over forty highlights from the collection, ranging from seventeenth century works on canvas to contemporary photography. Sitters come from varied walks of life, including Mary, Queen of Scots, Bonnie Prince Charlie, J.M. Barrie and Robert Louis Stevenson, Sean Connery, Billy Connolly, Ian Rankin and J.K. Rowling.

The Scottish National Portrait Gallery closed in 2009 to let work start on Portrait of the Nation, the National Galleries of Scotland's ambitious project to restore and reinvigorate Scotland's collection of national portraits. The Scottish National Portrait Gallery will reopen in the autumn of 2011.
