An Introduction to the Art of Eastern Europe: Part 1 - Wednesday, 18th February 2009

This short course led by Dr Jonathan Blackwood, Lecturer in the History and Theory of Art at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Fine Art and Design, Dundee, will explore the art of Eastern Europe. The three sessions will focus on the following:
Wednesday 18 Februrary: Modernism in Eastern Europe before 1945After introducing what is meant by 'Eastern Europe', this session will look at the relationship between the 'East' and Western European modernism, showing how they changed and mutated. This lecture will focus, in particular, on Slovenia, Hungary and the Czech Republic.Wednesday 25 February: The Warsaw Pact? Socialist Realism and the Artist under Marxism-LeninismThe lecture introduces the concepts of 'Marxism-Leninism' and 'socialist realism' and shows how the two doctrines were inextricably linked in the countries which formed part of the Cold War Warsaw Pact. In addition to providing examples of official 'socialist realist' art, it will also take time to consider the strategies of those who chose to resist or stand outside the 'official' art world. This lecture will look at artists from East Germany, Bulgaria and the USSR.Wednesday 4 March: After All That: The Contemporary Artist in Late Capitalist Eastern EuropeWith the dissolution of the Eastern bloc in 1989-91, many were quick to proclaim the 'end of history'. But, for countries adapting to different political and cultural systems, in many ways, history was just beginning. The lecture considers the impact of the collapse of Communism on the art world and the structures and institutions that have arisen in their place. This lecture takes the three Baltic republics - Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania - as case studies.

An Introduction to the Art of Eastern Europe: Part 2 - Wednesday, 25th February 2009
