This work is one of a suite of images, known collectively as Hell and exhibited together in the new hang of the permanent collection at the Gallery of Modern Art.
Dr Jonathan Blackwood, Lecturer & Course Director, History & Theory of Art at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Fine Art in Dundee, looks at the series in detail, setting them in the context of post-war German expressionism and the turbulent social and political events of that time.

Dr Glyn Davis, Glasgow School of Art, will examine Arbus' relationship to gay male subcultures of drag and performance, and the politics of bringing these communities and activities to a wider public through still imagery.
Arbus' photographs of these men will be contextualised in relation to photographic records of US gay culture of the 1960s and 1970s taken by other fine art photographers, photojournalists, and tabloid reporters; they will also be discussed in relation to the varied activities of the gay rights movement of the time.

In the mid 60s, Diane Arbus was recognised as a photographic artist because her work conformed to a proscriptive sense of tradition rooted in the 19th century and the vernacular. Nowadays Arbus has attained critical acclaim beyond the specialised work of photography and her reputation continues to grow.
David Brittain, Research Associate at Manchester Metropolitan University and author of the recent book, The Jet Age Compendium: Eduardo Paolozzi at Ambit, offers a personal perspective on the changing reputation of this sometimes controversial artist.

Izzy Orts and The Silver Dollar Bar Mystery - Tuesday, 4th May 2010

The National Gallery holds one of Edward Burra’s best-loved paintings, which has always been known as Izzy Ort’s, a remembrance of phantasmagoric bar-hopping in downtown Boston between the wars.
But is it Izzy Ort’s, or is it actually a painting of another bar entirely, the Silver Dollar? Was it painted in 1937 or in 1955? Professor Jane Stevenson, Regius Professor of Humanity, University of Aberdeen, presents a mystery, the evidence, and a possible solution.

Amongst the artists and writers considered will be Alfons Mucha, Frantisek Kupka, Emil Filla, Josef Lada and Jaroslav Hasek.

Artist and poet Alec Finlay will discuss the work of the poet Ian Hamilton Finlay and the garden that he created with Sue Finlay at Stonypath, Little Sparta.
This talk is inspired by the installation of Finlay's Artist Room at the Gallery of Modern Art as part of the d'Offay bequest.
Alec will reflect on the sea, a recurring theme in Finlay's poetry and art – symbolic of yearning, homesickness and homelessness. He will also discuss the concept of the gift in the light of Finlay's collaborative practice, and the history of the garden from its origins to the present day.
This informal talk is drawn from a wider written study Alec is currently preparing on The Stonypathian and The Little Spartan and will be illustrated with photographs of the garden by Finlay's collaborators, including Robin Gillanders.
