The notions of what 'Scotland' is, and ideas of belonging to a 'Scottish' identity, are continually re-defined and re-negotiated. Dr Jonathan Blackwood, Duncan of Jordanstone, Dundee, begins with Scotland very much an integral part of the Union at the end of World War Two, to the present day, when the country's very position in that Union is in question. Work by artists such as Colquhoun and MacBryde, McIntosh Patrick, Sandy Moffat, Douglas Gordon and Roddy Buchanan will be considered against a developing backdrop of political and cultural debate.

In 1853, the best-known British art critic of the day, John Ruskin, criticised a painting of street urchins by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, then the best-known Spanish Old Master, as ‘mere delight in foulness'. Many would say that Murillo's critical reputation in Britain has never recovered from this attack, yet he is undoubtedly one of the greatest Spanish painters. Dr Hilary Macartney, Honorary Research Fellow, University of Glasgow, examines some of his paintings which made - and broke - the critical esteem of Murillo in Britain.

David Howarth, Head of History of Art at the University of Edinburgh, offers a survey of the complex fascination the British have had with Spain. Many saw the repulse of the Spanish Armada as a defining moment for English nationhood. The British engagement with Spain during the Peninsular War against Napoleon, brought the two nations close, whilst the controversy surrounding British attitudes to the Spanish Civil War, helped to polarise politics before the Second World War.

Nineteenth-century travel to Spain was largely stimulated by its Islamic past. This could be best felt in the medieval monuments in the southern province of Andalucia, where Muslim rule had persisted longer than in any other part of the Peninsula. The Alhambra - the vast palace complex built by the Nasrid sultans in Granada - captivated the artist's imagination like no other building in Spain. A favourite subject of artists and writers, it was popularised in literature, paintings, prints, drawings, photographs and architectural models. Claudia Heide, Visiting Lecturer (History of Art) at the University of Edinburgh, explores the British fascination with the Alhambra in the nineteenth century.

Alison Watt is one of Scotland's most exciting and original painters. Her recent successful exhibition, Phantom, at the National Gallery in London, brought her much critical acclaim. During her time in London, she became obsessed by Zurbarán's Saint Francis in Meditation. In this informal conversation with Colin Wiggins, curator of her London exhibition, Alison will discuss the mysterious nature of this painting and its personal meaning to her.

Numerous British literary and artistic travellers to Spain in the early 20th century - from Laurie Lee and Gerald Brenan to Edward Burra and David Bomberg - started wandering far from the beaten romantic trail. Whether delving into the seedier side streets of Barcelona, or discovering the virgin paradise of the Alpujarra, or exploring the inner world of Toledo, they greatly opened up the foreign appreciation of Spain. A talk by author Dr Michael Jacobs.

One of Goya's greatest achievements was his terrifying series of etchings of the Disasters of War, representing the cruelties of the Spanish War of Independence against the Napoleonic army. David Wilkie also made a series of paintings of the war, but of a very different nature. Nicholas Tromans, Senior Lecturer, Kingston University, compares two different artistic perspectives upon a conflict that defined modern European history.
