Uncovering the Sculpture of the Scottish Colourist J. D. Fergusson

Presented by Alice Strang, Senior Curator, Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art

J.D. Fergusson is the only one of the four artists commonly known as ‘The Scottish Colourists’ to have produced sculpture. However, Fergusson’s sculpture still remains a little-known aspect of his oeuvre. There is much to be established and disseminated. Approximately twelve sculptures have been selected for display in the 2013-14 Fergusson retrospective at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, making it the largest-ever gathering of Fergusson’s work in this field - an ideal time for reflection on Fergusson’s sculpture to take place.

Alice Strang is a Senior Curator at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, and has most recently curated the Scottish Colourist series at Modern Two, the third and final of which is a J.D. Fergusson retrospective.
