The display touches on the impact that frames have had on the presentation of the painting itself and how they have developed over the years from simple fillets to elaborate and ornate creations. It includes examples of the different timbers, equipment and joins used in various eras by carpenters, carvers and gilders. It also explains past and present terminologies and techniques employed when carving in wood or applying gilt and plaster ornamentation.

The Granton display is small but informative and can be viewed by appointment or visited on the Art Stores open day.
