The surface of the figures and those props that could not be removed from the work - such as the man’s watch, glasses and sandals - were surface-cleaned by a paintings conservator using slightly dampened cotton swabs. Some abrasion to the flesh tones was noted from handling when positioning the figures for display. A number of scratches were retouched with watercolour.

Once the conservation was complete and the figures redressed, it was clear that the removal of surface grime on all parts of Tourists had markedly improved the work’s overall appearance.
