The National Gallery of Scotland Research Library is for reference only. It covers the period from about 1300 to about 1900, reflecting the Gallery's art collection.

It holds approximately 50,000 volumes of books and journals, as well as photographs, microfiches, archival material relating to the history of the National Gallery of Scotland and information dossiers for each painting and sculpture in the collection. It holds many monographs, catalogues raisonnés, public collection catalogues, auction sale and exhibition catalogues.

The Library is open to visitors from Monday to Friday from 10am-12.30pm and 2-4.30pm.

Individual visits can be made without an appointment, although for specific research enquiries or for visitors travelling some distance, it is advisable to book ahead. Group visits must be pre-booked and numbers are limited. Visitors without appointments should report to the Weston Link information desk. Contact us to make an appointment.
