Anne Erskine was the elder daughter of John Erskine, 14th Laird of Dun and Margaret Inglis. Her maternal grandparents, Sir John and Lady Inglis of Cramond, were painted by Allan Ramsay and these portraits are part of the National Galleries of Scotland's collection. There are also portraits of her husband John Wauchope of Edmonstone, and also of her son, James.

Originally apprenticed to a goldsmith, Henry Raeburn showed enormous artistic talent as a young man. In 1784 he moved to London where he met the important portrait painter Joshua Reynolds. He spent some time in Italy but returned to Edinburgh in 1787 where he began painting portraits of the rich,...
