Zangaki
A Syrian Shepherdabout 1865The nineteenth-century westerner looking at this photograph would have been reminded of the origins of Christianity. This Syrian shepherd could easily be one of Jesus' disciples. Wealthy westerners must have felt challenged by his steady gaze and simple dress, referring to the simplicity and poverty of early Christianity. The West's enslavement to fashion sits rather uneasily beside this image of permanence.

Zangaki (Egyptian, active 1880 - 1899)
Zangaki was a commercial photographer, most probably of Egyptian origin, active in the Middle East in the 1880s and 1890s. He took pictures of local people as well as European tourists, recording the curious encounter between the inhabitants of the lands of the Bible and their visitors from the West.
