This proud and cheerful portrait suggests the high hopes the exiled Stuarts had of their young prince. The grandson of the deposed British King, James VII and II, Charles was born in Rome. Handsome - 'Bonnie Prince Charlie' - and brave, he attempted to regain the throne for his father. In 1745, with an army of Highlanders, he marched as far south as Derby but then was forced to retreat. The rising was totally defeated at the Battle of Culloden in 1746 and Charles remained in exile the rest of his life.

The Stuarts (The Stewarts)

A British royal dynasty that began in 1603 with the union of the crowns of Scotland and England under King James VI and I (the last of the Scottish Stuart monarchs) and lasted until 1714. The Stuart reign included a civil war and short-lived republic after the execution of Charles I. The monarchy was restored with Charles II as king in 1660 but James II was deposed shortly afterwards in 1689 by William and Mary of Orange in the 'Glorious Revolution'. After the Act of Settlement in 1701, only Protestants could hold the throne and the Stuart line ended with the death of Queen Anne.
