Inspired? Get Writing! Creative Writing Competition
Launched in October 2005, the Inspired? Get Writing! creative writing competition encourages interaction between two important art forms: the visual arts and literature. It seeks to involve new literary-minded audiences in a relationship with the National Galleries of Scotland, and to encourage existing visitors to consider the National Collection afresh.

Inspired? Get Writing! is a partnership project. It was initially co-organised by the National Galleries of Scotland and the English-Speaking Union, and supported by The Scotsman newspaper. Over 410 entries were received in its first year.

Inspired? Get Writing! was re-launched in September 2006 with the Scottish Poetry Library as an additional partner. The sponsor this year was the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA), while The Scotsman continues to promote and support the venture.

Flotsam and Jetsam
Jolly as two old drunks
Staggering and flapping
Freckle cheeks, virgin white nose
A reflection from the moon.

Clasping hands
Like whiskey or baby bottles
In a world where happiness is bought in white paper pokes
And sadness yawns in skint knees
Their brains a collage of good and bad.

And they’re skittering and strolling
They’re scattering laughter like birdseed
Splashing colour through puddles
In tobacco-tin housed streets.
