  • Scottish Art
The man in the boat is Ian Hamilton Finlay, rowing on one of the ponds in his garden, Little Sparta, in the Pentland Hills near Edinburgh. Little Sparta is the artistic expression of Finlay's interest in the relationship between words and images, with sculpture and carved inscriptions thoughtfully placed in the landscape. Robin Gillanders has mounted each of the photographs onto canvas, with 'little tears and rents in it' to echo the 'idea of a sail' to emphasise Finlay's interest in boats and the sea.
