  • Scottish Art
Shown here wearing the Glasgow Rangers kit, ‘Slim Jim’ as he was known to his fans, glances at us in a super-confident yet disarming manner. Having emerged from the coalfields of Fife, he became ‘simply the best’ footballer in Scottish history. Between 1960-4 he was one of the most gifted players in Europe but his peak was short-lived. Baxter’s most memorable performance was the 1967 game at Wembley when Scotland beat the World Champions England owing to his incredible skill with the football. Sir Alex Ferguson is reported as saying: "You could have set his performance to music".
