The Roslin Institute of the University of Edinburgh is a major international centre for research on the molecular and quantitative genetics of farm animals. This photograph is part of a series of four images which show the key members of the team that created Dolly the sheep, the first mammal cloned from an adult cell. Tracking the main stages of the cloning process, this photograph shows John Bracken and Majorie Richie preparing for surgery. Dolly was successfully delivered by a caesarean section on 5 July 1996. In the 1990s the photographer Wendy McMurdo was exploring the idea of the perfect copy in relation to cloning, a parallel concern of the scientific world.
