If the date of 1654 on this portrait is correct then this little portrait of Robert, Lord Kerr was painted in France when the eighteen year old son of the 3rd Earl of Lothian was on a continental tour with his younger brother William. The two boys left Scotland for Holland in March 1651. Their destination was the University of Leyden. There they were visited by their grandfather the Earl of Ancram who was living in exile in Amsterdam. Between January 1654 and March 1657 they travelled in Northern France and returned home to Newbattle in June. The total cost of the brothers' travels was £25,905 Scots.
