Unemployed Workers’ Demonstration, Trealaw, South Wales Photographed 1935
Early 1935 witnessed widespread demonstrations across South Wales against further government cuts in unemployment benefit. Miners were particularly angered by the imposition of the Means Test, an intrusive examination by local Public Assistance Committees of the income, savings and possessions of the whole family. In this dramatic photograph, Tudor-Hart’s elevated position clearly attracts the amused attention of the marchers. One of the banners proclaims: “We must fight now, before our daily bread becomes our Sunday dinner”.
