Demolished
Published 1996
'Demolished' is Whiteread's first series of prints. The prints originate in a set of twelve photographs of buildings being demolished in Hackney, East London taken between October 1993 and June 1995. There are four images of three demolition sites. The prints are similar to Whiteread's sculptures, in their suggestion of the trace of a human presence. The casts suggest the history of the objects: the people who used them and the things they contained. The tower blocks represent social neglect and poverty and are evocative of the countless lives lived within them.
