Guy Fawkes is the most notorious of the conspirators in the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605, in which a group of English Catholics planned to blow up the House of Lords during the State opening of Parliament, and kill King James I and VI. The conspirators had leased a storeroom beneath the House of Lords, which they filled with barrels of gunpowder. Following a tip-off, the king ordered the cellars to be searched and the gunpowder was discovered. Fawkes was arrested and gave up his fellow plotters. This sketch shows Fawkes being dragged to execution. Fawkes was spared the pain of being hung, drawn and quartered, as he leaped from the gallows, breaking his own neck in the fall.
