Neuwied and Weise Thurn, with Hoch's Monument on the Rhine, looking towards Andernach

This highly coloured riverscape was worked up in Turner's studio from a pencil sketch made on a walking tour along the Rhine in 1817. Turner captures the grand expanse of the river valley and the distant misty mountains while including a variety of human and animal activity to enliven the foreground. The town of Weissenthurm is on the left (its white tower, ironically, in shadow) and Neuwied on the opposite bank. The drawing was probably made as one of a series of thirty six views of the Rhine to be engraved by W.B.Cooke, although the project was abandoned.
