A New Spirit in Painting
1983
- Scottish Art
In this print, Paolozzi satirises the art world as much as he draws on traditional art sources. The upper half of the print is made up of many art-historical figures and motifs, ranging from the grotesque heads of baroque sculptor Franz Xavier Messerschmidt, to concentric rings of colour-theory and allusions to American Pop-Art. It makes use of the cover of a catalogue for the 1981 art exhibition ?A new spirit in painting?, held in the Royal Academy of Arts, London. Appointed a Royal Academician in 1979, Paolozzi queried both the exhibition's contents as its costs.
