Study for ‘Between Kilburn and Willesden Green, Winter Evening’ 1992
This charcoal sketch is a study for a painting in the collection of the Modern One. It is typical of Kossoff's large-scale studies, executed at the scene with speed and vigour using charcoal, and later used in the studio as the basis for a richly worked oil painting. Kossoff's use of smudging on the trains vividly suggests their speed as they race past the artist while he sketches. Drawing is an essential part of Kossoff's artistic practice, both as an activity in its own right and as a prerequisite for painting, as is the case with this sketch.
