This photograph depicts a miner in his home environment. It is a snapshot of his interests and his personal life away from his job. Rogovin travelled to Scotland in 1982 to capture images of Scottish miners as part of his series ‘The Family of Miners’. In this he documented the miners at work and contrasted this to images of them in their social setting. The result is a more complete portrait of the miners and an insight into their life beyond the dark, claustrophobic mine where they spend most of their working life. This is a captivating portrait with bold imagery. The figure competes for the viewer’s attention with the garish curtains and the large poster of a man on a motorbike.
