Double loop on the Darjeeling-Himalayan Railway about 1880
This photograph of an amazing piece of engineering was taken in the Himalayan mountains. The railway was constructed between 1879 and 1881 and ran fifty-one miles from Siliguri to Darjeeling, taking nearly six hours to travel. The British were able to take control of the countries of the empire in Queen Victoria's reign, partly through the use of advanced technology.
