In contrast to Sander’s photographs of fraternity students who tended to be conservative and right-wing, this image shows a group of student friends, all of whom were left-wing radicals and members of the Communist Party. Sander’s own son, Erich, is on the far left, next to Richard Creutzberg, Hans Schoemann and Georg Hansen. This is a powerful and somewhat intimidating image. These four young men stare intently into the camera in a manner that seems to ask something of the viewer. It becomes even more commanding in the knowledge that Erich Sander was imprisoned by the Nazis in 1934 for his involvement in left-wing politics. He died in prison ten years later. His friends also suffered for their socialist beliefs.
