La Fornarina Visits London 1982
Roland Penrose made collages throughout his life but had a particular burst of creativity during his later years. He made several series of collages using tourist postcards bought on travels abroad. This work is dominated by postcards of Raphael’s famous painting ‘La Fornarina’, which can be found in the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica in Rome. These are combined with postcards of London, showing Tower Bridge at the top of the collage and the Houses of Parliament at the bottom. The work contains other collaged paper elements, including what appears to be part of a child’s drawing, on yellow paper at the top of the piece.
