This work dates from the same period as Philipson's angst-ridden war paintings. As with his Mexican altar pictures of the 1960s, `Cathedral Interior, Remembrance? developed the themes of the rose window and interior spaces. Philipson said: ?What impressed me about the Venetian churches - San Marco above all - was a sense of their beautifully lit spaces. They gave me a great desire to recreate all their visual aspects simultaneously, taking in their inspired intricate rhythms and richly saturated colour.?
