Sir Tom Farmer OBE
1996
- Scottish Art
Sir Tom Farmer left school at fifteen and swept the floor in a tyre company. But he learned quickly and his ambition led him to set up Kwik-Fit, one of the world?s largest tyre and exhaust groups. He pioneered a fresh kind of service for the motorist and his business was eventually bought out by the Ford motor group for close to #1 billion. Sir Tom supports numerous charitable organisations, including a long-standing commitment to the Roman Catholic Church in Scotland. He remains a mentor to many entrepreneurs and an inspiration to many young people in Scotland today: ?For me, an entrepreneur is someone who sees an opportunity and is able to reach out and grasp it for their own benefit ? the benefit of their family, their business ? and very importantly, for the benefit of the community.?
