- Scottish Art
This is one of a group of drawings Paolozzi made with a reed pen while he was at the Slade School of Art in 1946-7. The drawings relate to Picasso’s drawings of the late 1930s, which could, among other places, be seen in the collection of Roland Penrose. A friend of Picasso and his future biographer, Penrose met Paolozzi around the time these drawings were made. This particular drawing is related to the sculpture ‘Horse’s Head’, which is also in the Modern One’s collection. The parallel lines in pen and ink, which feature so dominantly in this collage can also be found on the surface of the sculpture, indicating the close relation of the two types of media for Paolozzi.
