The infamous romantic poet Lord Byron was half-Scottish and spent his early childhood in Aberdeen. His complicated relationships caused scandal, and, in 1816, he left Britain forever. In 1822 the poet was living in Italy with his lover, Countess Teresa Guiccioli. The following year Byron embarked on his fateful voyage to Greece during the Greek War of Independence. Shortly after arriving in Missolonghi in January 1824, he fell ill and died. This miniature was undoubtedly inspired by Thomas Phillips’s 1813 portrait which shows the youthful Byron in a cloak and open-necked white shirt.
