Stanley Baxter has enthralled generations of family audiences not only with his television specials — which at their peak drew twenty million viewers — but with his appearances in pantomime. During a forty-year career he played numerous Dames and was considered one of the finest in the business. Baxter transferred the high production values of his televised song, dance and comedy routines to pantomime. Having been influenced by the physical comedy of Dave Willis, Baxter provided inspiration for younger comedians including the creators of ‘Chewin’ the Fat’ and ‘Still Game’. In 1997 he was given the Lifetime Achievement Award at the British Comedy Awards.
