The sitter's husband was twice Lord Provost of Edinburgh. His portrait, the companion to this and painted at the same time, belongs to Edinburgh City Art Gallery and shows Stuart at a writing table holding a book and a letter. Mosman was a native of Aberdeen, where he taught drawing, geometry, perspective and architecture at the Kings' and Marischal Colleges.
