This portrait is typical of Cosway?s miniature style, which he had perfected by the 1780s. It shows John Campbell, first Baron Cawdor of Castlemartin. His face is delicately finished with his coat and white collar slightly more painterly. The paint on the ivory creates a luminous feel resulting in an extremely flattering image. Campbell?s family originated from Scotland, yet he was born and grew up in England and Wales (his great grandfather?s wife had inherited land in Wales). He was MP for Cardigan and Governor of Milford Haven from 1780 until his death.
Richard Cosway (English, 1742 - 1821)
Cosway was an important artist and collector in Regency Britain. Born in Devon, he went to London in 1754 to study under the artist William Shipley. His talents were rewarded and in the 1760s he began exhibiting his work at the Free Society of Artists and the Society of Artists. In 1769 Cosway became a student at the Royal Academy Schools where he went on to be elected a Royal Academician. He had several important patrons over his career, of which the most significant was George, Prince of Wales (later George IV). Cosway recorded George?s image from 1780-1808.
