  • Scottish Art
The son of Mary, Queen of Scots and Lord Darnley, James survived a turbulent childhood to become one of Scotland’s most successful monarchs. An intellectual who also possessed shrewd common sense, he married Princess Anne of Denmark and, in 1603, achieved his greatest ambition when he succeeded Elizabeth I to the English throne. Thereafter, he prided himself on ruling his northern kingdom 'by the stroke of his pen'.
