Gurupada Chitrakar (Bengali, born 1965)
Gurupada was born in Naya, a village in Midnapur, West Bengal. He is an internationally renowned scroll artist in the ancient Patua tradition of Bengal in which the storytellers are also picture makers (chitrakars). The process begins with the artist producing lyrics, followed by music and lastly the scroll is made. The final performance involves the unrolling of the scroll as the artist sings the song. Traditionally, scroll painting is passed down through the family via the father, but as Gurupada?s father died when he was a child he learnt the process from his uncle.
