Just Remember How It Was1998This work is typical of Emin's confrontational and uninhibited style. To make her monoprints, Emin places a sheet of paper, or cloth in this instance, on an inked glass surface and spontaneously scrawls out words and images. This technique produces single, unique prints. The artist is required to draw and write in reverse, making the process awkward. The use of stitching in this work connects it to Emin's large-scale blankets and other appliquéd work. When seem from a distance, her art has a child-like simplicity which belies its raw expression and directness. It has an immediate impact on the viewer.

Appliqué
A means of decorating textiles by cutting a design from one fabric and applying it to another.
Monoprint
A print made as a single and unique work of art by any printing technique.
An image pressed or stamped onto paper or fabric. This encompasses a wide variety of techniques, usually produced in multiples, although one-off prints, known as monoprints, are also included. The term is also applied to photographic images.

Tracey Emin (English, born 1963)
Emin was born in London and grew up in Margate. She studied at Maidstone College of Art and the Royal College of Art, London. Emin works in a variety of media, including painting, drawing, printmaking, film, installation, embroidery, neon and text. She uses her personal experiences to make highly confessional works in which she exposes herself, her hopes, humiliations, failures and successes in a very direct manner. Emin deals relentlessly with the minutiae of her life and with the common subjects of sexuality, mortality and what it means to be an artist. She was shortlisted for the Turner Prize in 1999.

Installation art
An art practice developed in the second half of the 20th century that broke away from the view of a sculpture as a singular object to be looked at. Instead, installation artists create an environment that may surround the viewer. Many are temporary or created for a particular location.
Medium/ media
The material from which an artwork is made, e.g. oil paint, bronze, paper. 'Medium' is also used for the liquid element of paint in which a colouring agent is carried. 'Mixed media' is used when an artist combines several different materials in an artwork.
Turner Prize
An annual British art prize which was founded in 1984 by the Tate Gallery's Patrons of New Art. It is intended to promote public discussion of developments in contemporary British art and generates media attention and, at times, controversy. Winners include Gilbert and George , Richard Long, Rachel Whiteread and Douglas Gordon.
