For its first ARTIST ROOMS project, mac birmingham will present the work of American artist, Robert Therrien. The immediacy, accessibility and playful relationship with childhood in Therrien’s work, combined with narrative, storytelling, folklore and fairy tale, offer huge potential for mac birmingham, to build upon its track record for engaging children and young people with contemporary art. Locating this show at the heart of mac birmingham’s summer 2014 programme, it will occupy the 250m2 double-height, first floor gallery and spread throughout the building and will include the important work No Title (Table and Four Chairs) (2003), a colossal sculpture of a dining room set enlarged to three times its original size. mac birmingham is also working towards an innovative project which will see a team of young people using the themes of Therrien’s work to engage and develop young audiences.
