The image of ‘The Star’ used on this exhibition poster belongs to a portfolio of ten screenprints called ‘Myths’ published in 1981. Here Warhol has used a photograph of Greta Garbo from the film ‘Mata Hari’, released in 1931. The film was based on the true story of an erotic dancer who was executed in 1917 for espionage during World War I. The tale fired popular imagination and there is still mystery surrounding her alleged guilt. The series is based on characters which have become icons. All the prints in the series are inlaid with diamond dust, creating the effect of a shimmering surface, reminiscent of Warhol’s use of gold leaf in the late 1950s. Warhol also produced a series of paintings based on the ‘Myth’ characters.
